The Snowbirds Sense Spring is in the Air!

The crowded hotspots of the southern States are starting to thin out as the snowbirds fly and drive home to their main places of residence. Arizona and Florida restaurants have fewer people standing in line waiting to eat and the highways are sporting less out of town license plates and are less crowded as well. The tourism industry relies heavily on snowbirds (mostly seniors who enjoy a second home in a warm climate) but the local residents are often happy to be able to get a seat at a restaurant and find a place to lay their towel at the beach once the snowbirds return to their home up north.

Movers Not Required
For the most part a moving company is not required when snowbirds fly south. However, when first buying a place they may purchase most of the furnishings locally but still wish to bring down some furniture from up north. Nationwide Relocation Services reviews may reveal additional information for seasonal movers. After the initial trip they become pros at flitting back and forth to their dual residences. Some make multiple trips a year for anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. They have a separate name: snowflakes!

Tips when You're a Snowbird or a Snowflake
When living in two different places for extended periods it can get a little confusing, so we've compiled some tips that take your particular situation into consideration.

  • Stopping and starting services. Keep a list of all of the services you need to notify when going from one home to another. Your mail, telephone service and daily newspaper should be advised and transferred or stopped until your return.
  • Set your thermostat and set timers. Moderately set your thermostat so neither frozen pipes occur nor mold and mildew form, depending on which household is unoccupied. Timers for various lights around the house are a smart way to avoid robberies when away.
  • Have a friend or next door neighbor check on your house. This is an important tip, especially for the house up north during the winter. If the power goes out you can be looking at frozen pipes and major damages. Having someone check in every other day could save you big problems and even bigger repair bills.
  • Set up credit card payments on line if your mail isn't forwarded. You want your credit score to remain high, so set up credit card payments online and have other bills such as mortgage, electricity, etc set up online as well or with auto pay.
