Here are our tips to have a bug-free bathroom:
- Wallpaper: Take down any wallpaper on the walls. The steam that is created by your hot showers can cause mold to grow underneath wallpaper. If you have your heart set on wallpaper, choose some that is waterproof.
- Shower Curtains: Keep your shower curtains clean by washing them once a month. Use an anti-fungal cleaner to prevent any mold growth.
- Toothbrush Holder: Beware of your toothbrush holder! Mold, scum and old toothpaste tend to stick to the bottom of the holder and are not safe for you or your toothbrush.
- Mold: You can use soap and water to clean surfaces and prevent mold, but once there is mold in an area, you will need to get a mold-killing product.
- Ventilation: Ventilation is essential in a bathroom. When you are showering, you need to open a window or turn on an exhaust fan to allow air circulation. It is a good idea to turn on the fan before you start your shower to minimize the amount of steam that builds up in your bathroom.
- Tub: Towel-dry your tub after a shower or bath. Warm and wet spaces are ideal for mold growth.
- Bath Mats: Any bath mats or rugs that you keep in your bathroom should be properly aired out to reduce the chance of mold. Get ones that are washable and use warm water.
- Bathroom Towels: Any towels that are left in the bathroom constantly should be washed frequently in hot water.
- Reading Material: If you have a stack of magazines or books in your bathroom, you should rotate them. The papers can absorb moisture and there are plenty of dark spaces for mold to grow.
- Carpet Floors: If your bathroom has carpet floors, you should take all of it out. Carpet is very susceptible to mold so the only way to eliminate its growth is to remove it. Replace the carpet with tile, vinyl, wood or linoleum.
