Tie a String Around Your Finger: Items You Don’t Want to Forget when Moving

Tying a string around your finger is one way to remember something, but not entirely practical! Important or not, with so much on your mind, it’s easy to forget. How can you remember every detail when moving? Easy.
Make a visible list!

This is not high tech but it is a really good way to avoid forgetting important items when you’re moving. Take a sheet of paper and an over-sized refrigerator magnet. That’s the system. It might sound silly and over-simplified but the fact of the matter is – out of sight, out of mind. When you see this list on the front of your refrigerator every day, you can easily add to it as you remember things. If you’re moving a distance away, you don’t want to forget items that result in upsets or costing you.

The Items People Tend to Forget
Your do-not-forget list may be different from others, but many seem to forget some of the following:

  • Medical Records. Weeks before you plan to move, put in a call to all of your doctors and dentist to request copies of your medical files.
  • School Transcripts. Your children’s schools also need to be contacted so you have their transcripts when visiting their new schools.
  • Stop Service Dates. You can also post a calendar sheet on the refrigerator for the month you’re moving and post stop service dates for the water, garbage collection, cable and power and light companies.
  • Renewing Prescriptions. Until such time you can set up an appointment with a new doctor, make sure you are covered for an extra month or so when taking prescription medications.

The List Goes On!
Your list may go on and on as you get one thing done and then think of another to add. When you have this list on the door of your refrigerator, though, the chances of forgetting something that is important are fewer. Your list may also include: requesting your final bills for the above mentioned service companies, sending out change of address notifications to your credit card companies and filling out a change of address form with forwarding address for the post office.
