Be sure to read part one of Go List Crazy! Lists that Make Your Move Easier to learn about all the lists that will help you move.
Home Inventory List
This is a list that will not only help you when you are moving, but it is extremely important to have for your home always. This list will document all of your belongings. You don't have to include every item you own, but you want to include items that are expensive or important.
For those that already have a list, this is an opportunity to double check that it is up to date. Go through and see if there is anything missing and if all the documentation is there to provide proof. This shouldn't take very long and will help you make a list with your moving company. Using this list will also help if there are any damages to your items. That is why it is important to keep records of your belongings.
For those that do not yet have a list, you will want to begin making one as soon as possible. There are two options for starting a home inventory list:
1. Start with most expensive: Depending on how much time you have, you will definitely want to have information regarding your most expensive assets. This list will at least cover you if there are any problems with damaged or stolen items.
2. Work as you go through your belongings: If you have a little more time, you can write down your belongings as you organize them. As you go through room by room, it will be easier to know what you are keeping and then make a list.
In your list you will want to include a description, model number, photograph, receipt or video. The more information you have, the better. Keep all this documentation with you as you travel. This list will be useful for much longer than your move, so if there is only one list you can do, this should be your first pick.
High-Value List
You may think that this list is the exact same as the one we mentioned in the home inventory list, but it has some distinct differences. When you talk to a moving company about your move, they will often require you to have a list of your belongings and a separate list for your high-value items. A high-value item is typically an item that is more than $100 per pound.
Before you decide on a moving company, be sure to read their reviews. For example, Nationwide Relocation Services reviews show that our customers are continually satisfied with our services.
